Apprenticeships
“Cooperatives provide education and training for their members, elected representatives, managers, and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their co-operatives. They inform the general public - particularly young people and opinion leaders - about the nature and benefits of co-operation.”
(Principle 5 of the cooperative principles, Education, Training, and Information)NOVA Web Development was founded in large part on the desire to embody this principle, which we consider a fundamental part of “helping to build the world we want to live in” - a world with educational opportunity and economic empowerment for all.
In 2012 Jeff Elkner co-founded NWD with Kevin Cole to provide training and a pathway to real work experience for aspiring student developers. Both career-long education workers, Jeff and Kevin shared a passion for teaching, learning, and software freedom.
NOVA Web Development has been welcoming interns to apprenticeship programs ever since. Most NWD interns are students from the dual-enrolled high school program where Jeff still teaches.
Types of Internships
1. Arlington Tech Capstone Interns: school-year-long (September to June) internships connected with the Arlington Tech Senior Capstone Experience, the goal of which is for interns to contribute to NWD while working toward their career start as responsible, ethical entry level IT professionals.
2. Arlington Public School PRIME Interns: a month-long summer (July) internship for gifted juniors and seniors of Arlington Public Schools.
3. Community Interns: variable length internships designed by the individual applicants and NWD members to help prepare college students and other interested developers for the responsible, ethical tech careers they envision.
